:: FIREFIGHTER FITNESS AWARENESS ::

The following articles provide a new awareness for firefighter fitness and long term survival. While many people assume that the major dangers we face include scene hazards, fire, uncooperative patients and fire ground accidents, the reality is that stress and sudden cardiac death are the most likely cause of death for firefighters. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), so far in 2004, approximately 55% of firefighter deaths were caused by stress/overexertion. And of these deaths, 23% were between the age 31-40, 26% were between the age 41-50, and 30% were between the age 51 to 60.

While we consistently train to handle fires, explosions, accident scenes, and terrorist attacks, how much effort is being put into the real threat to our lives? Our very own health and wellness depends upon proper fitness awareness for firefighters!

The following articles cover this topic with a clarity that is startling. Please read them and share these articles with others.

F2F has adopted and endorsed the "Crossfit" workout program www.crossfitatlanta.com as our official fitness program for the fire service. We think "Crossfit"  has all the elements to provide optimum fitness for firefighters. First it has a very reasonable "start up" cost. Secondly,  where limited space can be a problem crossfit can be set up in very limited quarters. Third, the routines vary and are quiet different from the workout programs that tend to be boring over time. Last, but  what is *most*  important is, IT WORKS!. With the short duration, high intensity workouts we think the Crossfit program is a perfect fit for every fire department.
